Working without a thought for air.

In an office you sit in the same place for hours. You feel every cold draught, every difference between feet and head, every humming outlet. Meanwhile the heat load rises with people, screens and sun, and the layout changes every few years.

The challenge

  • High internal heat load, at a fixed workstation.
  • Glass façades: with a heat transfer coefficient above 1.6–2 W/(m²·K), cold air can drop along the glass and flow into the occupied zone (TB 69 p. 4).
  • Little ceiling void, especially in refurbishment.
  • Flexible layouts: the outlet must still work after a refit.

The approach

Four ways to cool an office.

From the ceiling, mixing

Swirl diffusers and radial swirl diffusers for 2.2 to 4.5 m (DD-N DS 1175 E p. 4; RA-N DS 4012 E p. 12). The RA-N is low enough for a shallow ceiling void (DS 4012 E p. 2). The worked example in the RL datasheet is an open-plan office (DS 4186 E p. 7).

A line in the ceiling

Linear induction diffusers such as the IN-V disappear into the ceiling and can be aimed element by element (DS 4082e p. 2).

Water carries the load

Chilled ceilings and chilled sails remove the heat silently; the ventilation only has to supply fresh air. Above 50 W/m², that is the only way to reach category A (TB 69 p. 3). Active chilled beams are intended for low storey heights in new build and refurbishment (DK-LIG/Z, DS 4108 E p. 6).

From the floor

With a raised floor, the air comes from floor swirl outlets close to the workstation, and the user can aim the DB-D (DB-E DS 1146 E p. 10; DB-D DS 4074e p. 5).

At the façade

Induction units in the floor or parapet discharge in front of the glass (IG-M-LB DS 4137 E p. 2; IG-M-SB DS 4139 E p. 2).

displacement in offices

Possible, with corridor wall outlets Q-W, often combined with chilled ceilings (DS 4055 E p. 2). In offices the air volume is usually limited to 20 m³/(h·m²) (DS 4069 E p. 4).
