Air principle · induction

A thin jet takes the room along.

Air leaving a narrow opening at speed draws in the air around it. That is induction. An induction diffuser uses dozens of small jets at once; a chilled beam uses it to pull room air through a heat exchanger. A little supply air sets a lot of room air in motion.

See it in motion: the airflow of the IN-V →

What the air does

Many jets, one mixture.

Induction diffuser

A row of rotatable elements, each with two jet channels, forms many single jets with high induction. You set the direction per element: two-way, one-way or closed. (IN-V, DS 4082e p. 2–3, p. 14) In the IN-N6 the channels are fixed at 45°, alternately left and right. (DS 1125 E p. 2)

Wall outlet

In the BF-V, rotatable nozzle discs produce thin jets that carry along the gentle air from the perforated face plate. The result is a wide, stable fan of air. (DS 4101 E p. 2)

Active chilled beam

Primary air from nozzles pulls room air through the heat exchanger. The mixture is cooled or heated and flows horizontally along the ceiling into the room. (DK-LIG/Z, DS 4108 E)

Chilled sail with induction unit

In AVACS, the induction unit discharges about 70 % of the air above the panel and 30 % below it. (DS 4170 E p. 2)

When to choose induction

Discreet, yet powerful.

  • A slim line in the ceiling. The IN-V3 is 15 mm wide per row and disappears into the ceiling (DS 4082e p. 2, p. 13).
  • Direction per zone. Because every element is set individually, one linear diffuser can serve façade, corridor and workstation.
  • Water carries the load. In a chilled beam or façade unit, water removes most of the cooling load. The primary air is then mainly for ventilation and induction.
  • Highly glazed façades. Induction units in the floor or the parapet discharge in front of the glass (IG-M-LB DS 4137 E p. 2; IG-M-SB DS 4139 E p. 2).

When not: Above 7 m, even the IN-N6 is out of range. Look at adjustable swirl diffusers →.

TB 69

Active chilled beams produce a two-dimensional flow and fall under a maximum of −8 K (p. 5). For the maximum cooling load, fig. 8 applies instead of fig. 7 (p. 6).

BF-V reach

Approx. 6 m deep and approx. 4 m wide (DS 4101 E p. 4).

DK-LIG/Z in the occupied zone

At 40 m³/(h·m) primary air, 0.14–0.18 m/s at most, with a gradient of 1 K/m up to 3.5 m ceiling height (DS 4108 E p. 4).

Typical mistakes

Where it goes wrong.

  • The wrong type for the height. The IN-V2 is made for 2.7 to 5 m. Higher up, the IN-N6 (4–7 m) belongs there.
  • Heating without low-level extract. When heating with the IN-N6, about half the return air should be extracted in the floor zone (DS 1125 E p. 6). Otherwise the warm air stays up.
  • Treating a chilled beam like a ceiling diffuser. An active chilled beam discharges two-dimensionally and is limited to −8 K (TB 69 p. 5).
  • A passive chilled beam above a fixed workstation. The DK-F has no primary air: cooled air falls straight down. The datasheet rules out fixed workstations beneath it (DS 4091 E p. 2).
