Space · theatre and auditorium
A full house, and all you hear is the stage.
An auditorium packs hundreds of heat sources into a few square metres per person. They want fresh air, no draught on the neck and no hiss during the pianissimo. Theatres and concert venues have been Peek’s speciality since the second generation.
The challenge
- Many people, close together, with a high heat load in a short time.
- Raked seating: the distance between outlet and head differs per row.
- A high volume above the stage or stalls, and a lower one above the balcony.
- Strict acoustic requirements.
The approach: two hall concepts
One hall, two concepts.
Concept 1 · Steps and floor (displacement)
Fresh air enters low and slow, from the riser of the step or from the floor, and rises around the audience to the breathing zone.
- Q-SL · discharge velocity 0.18 m/s · above 0.3 m < 0.10 m/s · DS 4054 E p. 4–5
- Q-SL · example 1,200 mm, 72 m³/h: 17 Pa, 11 dB(A) · DS 4054 E p. 5
- Q-SR · one outlet per seat (DN 80) or per two (DN 100) · DS 4054 E p. 4
- Q-B · floor outlet, coverage radius 4–5 m, min. 0.8 m to the seat · DS 4062 E p. 2, p. 4
Auditoria: the same principle works in lecture and conference halls with raked seating, with timber or concrete steps (DS 4054 E p. 2).
Types: Q-SL · Q-SR · Q-ST (in the seat pedestal) · Q-B · DB-E
Concept 2 · Ceiling (mixing)
Everything from the ceiling. The adjustable radial swirl diffuser RA-V2 in the high part tilts its jet from horizontal when cooling to vertical when heating. The radial swirl diffuser RA-N above the balcony discharges horizontally along the ceiling.
- RA-V2 · discharge height 2.8–15 m · DS 4122 E p. 2
- RA-N · discharge height 2.2–4.5 m · DS 4012 E p. 12
Peek rule of thumb
From a discharge height of about 3–3.5 m, choose an adjustable swirl diffuser, so you can direct the jet for cooling and heating. Above the auditorium, that means the RA-V2, not the DD-N: the DD-N is made for lower rooms (2.2–4.5 m, and above 3 m only +5 K heating, DS 1175 E p. 4). Other adjustable types: DD-VG · DD-VL (DS 4033 E p. 2) and DD-VK (DS 1256 E p. 2).
Types: RA-V2 · RA-N · DD-VG · DD-VL (Krantz also names the DD-VL for theatres and concert halls because of its acoustics, DS 4033 E p. 2)
In addition · Jet from wall or balcony
Where no ceiling or step is available, a nozzle reaches far into the hall from the wall or a balcony parapet. The datasheet names concert halls explicitly (DS 1235e p. 2).
Which concept fits depends on the hall. That is where the conversation starts.
